Yesterday was my first game on the Mirage, a women’s league team at Ice Oasis (the rink where I was on the Sphinges last season). I decided not to play co-ed beginner’s league this season for a couple of different reasons, and instead joined the Saturday afternoon women’s league. With any luck, it won’t conflict with motorcycling too terribly much.
Anyway, holy shit, did I have fun last night.
The pace was much much faster than Saturday night, which left me in a whirlwind of giggling and skating and yelling for the whole hour. We played 4 on 4 with 2 on the bench, and I know I took much shorter shifts than anyone else on my team…this is good because it means I’m getting a great workout, and my shifts will get longer as my cardio endurance improves.
The teammates that I met yesterday are all really cool so far. I knew two of them already, so I didn’t feel totally out of place. Everyone gave me great advice on the bench/between periods/in the locker room after the game. One of the ladies double-checked with me after the game that her advice had been welcome…even though I LOVE getting tips and advice and criticism, I thought it was really nice of her to ask to make sure.
I think I played decently in the game, given how much faster game play was than anything I’d played in before. I had a couple of good passes, and some breakaways thanks to friends of mine on the other team who let me skate the puck up to practice shots on goal (they’re very good skaters and laughingly promised not to be so kind to me in the future 😉 ).
Overall, our team played pretty well together given that it was our first game. I think we’re going to have a lot of fun and hopefully play some great hockey this season. Woo!
