Stuff to hold stuff.

I clearly have no actual problems in my life, because I’m stressing out about what panniers to get for the F650GS.

I’ve narrowed the choices to:

Jesse (black)

Jesse650classicblack

(Saddlebags only for the time being)

Stats:
* 48 L per bag
* 8″W x 20″L x 17″H

Pros:
* I like the way the black looks
* Lid storage would let me carry first aid kit and tools without reducing carrying capacity for clothes, etc

Cons:
* More expensive than earth
* I don’t know whether stickers on black would look hinky

Hepco-Becker (aluminum)

Alu_stan_sc3845

Stats:
* 43L per bag
* 11.8″W x 18.7″L x 13.8″H

Pros:
* Looks nice
* Reasonable cost

Cons:
* I’m not sure my laptop would fit without going diagonally

Touratech Vega (aluminum)

01052203101lg

Stats:
* 41 L per bag
* 10.5″W x 17.3″L x 14.7″H

Pros:
* People I know and trust have these and really like them

Cons:
* Almost as spendy as the Jesses
* Also not sure about the 15″ laptop fitting in

Happy Trails Teton(aluminum)

(photo courtesy of advrider.com; I couldn’t find one of an F650GS with the Tetons)

Stats:
* 9″W x 18″L x 15″H

Pros:
* Reasonably priced
* I have other Happy Trails things (tail rack on the XT) and have been very happy with the build quality

Cons:
* Not as sexy as the Jesses 😉

Any comments/suggestions/recommendations?

    I’ve always liked the look of the Hepco-Becker bags. I think checking the laptop fit is essential, though.

    I’m with Kim, the Becker bags are the coolest lookin’ – if your laptop fits.
    Another option might be a hard sided laptop case as a topcase. My friend Comet did that on his FJR and it’s quite slick.
    (Or it could be a good excuse to get a new, smaller laptop…)

    So do you commute on the F650? Those bags are pretty wide – no lane splitting for you! If not for commuting, how about getting the cheaper bags and spending the extra cash on a travel laptop?

    I don’t really lane split much as is. My commuting traffic just isn’t that bad, luckily…and most of my commuting is on the Z these days.
    No travel laptops in my future…I just plunked down a fair bit of cash recently for my 15″ MacBook. *happy* It’s my one and only home computer.

    glad u r still riding. we met u in lebanon. remember showering at ann’s chateau? i was glad to see u have an F650GS. just got one (bought on ebay, flew to tampa, rode it back to ky!) a real fun bike. i bought soft bags, but will eventally get hard ones. $$$ seat is not comfy for me on long rides. i use a sheepskin which helps only a little. i love my torrence tires. good fllying down expressways, and also playing in woods and dirt and gravel. i need some of your books. will try emailing u. write me! love u! mary ann
