Southern Santa Cruz Mountains (XT225) After realizing that I hadn't ridden the XT at all since the Wind Dancers Pacific Rally last September, I knew it was time for an afternoon ride. Fortunately, my Wind Dancer friend Jenny and her Suzuki DR200 were available, so we made plans to meet at the local diner and hit the southern Santa Cruz Mountains.

There was a bit of drama in the days preceding our ride, as a teensy tiny innocuous-looking LED on my 12v socket had spent the past three months viciously sucking the life out of the XT's battery. Fortunately, I tried to start the bike early enough that it could go onto the charger until the day of our ride. Sigh. As if I wasn't feeling guilty enough for not riding the bike...

Ride to Wisconsin on my summer vacation Time to hit the road. Since I was only going as far as Reno, I left around noon instead of my usual dawntime departure. This was nice in that Peter could see me off, but in some ways, it's easier just to kiss his sleeping forehead and go. Even after 60,000 miles of riding, I get a nagging in my stomach when I leave for trips: I wonder why I'm leaving home, whether I'll be safe, what I hope to accomplish. I always cry until the first freeway entrance. After that, I rarely miss home again...

'05 ST.n West Coast Regional Meet The 2005 Sport-Touring.net West Coast Regional Meet was, once again, held up in Fortuna. This is a clever ploy by our eternal hosts, Gil (Dr. Gil) and Becky (Beck-Zuki); I'm convinced they spike the BBQ food so that we want to return year after year after year after... Fortunately, it doesn't take much arm-twisting.

This year's trip started out identically to last year's, except that Peter was tagging along this time. This has its pros and cons -- as anyone who's ever traveled with a non-morning person can attest to -- and I was left posting "Argh! Why will he not wake up! WAKE UP WAKE UP WAKE UP!" to the WCRM thread on ST.N early Friday morning...

Short Hollister Loop (XT225) Since Peter is a darling and recently bought us a wonderful beater Toyota pickup, I thought it'd be a good idea to do a short practice "hauling the Serow somewhere" trip. My original plan was to drive down to Bitterwater, about 90 miles away, then do some riding south of there. Unfortunately, I didn't sleep well at all the night before and woke up feeling exhausted. I decided last minute to drive to Hollister instead (about 50 miles from home) and do a much shorter loop. One of the best things about riding solo is that I can be as flexible as I need to be...
